Week 4

In Brockman's What is to come and How to predict it, he mentioned that although we still have only the most sketchy ideas for providing computers with capabilities for invention, reasoning by analogy and common sense and etc., advanced technology will ultimately make a big leap. It is shocking enough that there will be artificial immune systems that can counter both living viruses. It scared me when I read that eventually there will be "conscious" robots.

This reminds me the movie AI that the little boy was designed as a sweet and thoughtful boy robot being adopted by a family. However, he acted too emotional and being so jealous when his "mom" got pregnant(a real human being). This making his mom decided to dump him. This is sad that human beings create certain robots based on their needs but they are not aware of the consequence.

The Merger of Flash and Machines continues to talk about how technology can help people who suffered from the loss of hearing or got spine injuries. So over the next ten to twenty years, there will be a cultural shift that we will adopt robotic technology or steel into our bodies to improve what we can do and understand in the world.

As for the article Futuring Methods mentioned a lot of ways to predict future that we have talked in classes before. Such as scanning, scenarios, modeling, and visioning.

  1. The extreme end of robotic technology in humans will be something like the movie Terminator. In that movie cyborgs with human elements were created to fight wars against humans. We're headed down that path today as humans merge with technology. I hope that this stuff doesn't land in the wrong hands...

  2. I always think that the main things that separate humans from robots- will be emotions and our conscious. Though Brockman discusses that there will be a time when robots can be implanted with a conscious; I think that day is centuries away. Humans have still not been able to figure out how neurons in our nervous system are connected to our conscious!

I found it interesting that one day our brain could be augmented with neurons to increase intelligence- which again leads to the discussion of whether this is right or wrong.

I think if such developments grow exponentially, maybe humans will one day look completely different (like in the Japanese movie 'Weeping Demon' that Paige presented last week)

  3. I also enjoyed reading about the possibility of artificial immune systems. The impact that this type of advance would have on our world is almost unimaginable. Lets hope that this happens sooner rather than later :)

I must say I'm conflicted on the idea of being able to technologically tract the detail movements of anyone. This has a ton of benefits but could also easily cause a multitude of problems. I feel like this will happen eventually, I just hope that when it does there are regulations in place that allow the tracking to be useful but protected.

  4. With technology comes power. With power comes responsibility. I agree with Sara. There is probably no way to stop technology from moving forward, even if the advancements make us uneasy. That is the burden of change and growth. The more difficult burden of that is the responsibility of making sure that our advances are being used for the greater good, and it can be difficult to predict what that really is.
